Important: Deontological and Methodological Notice

The terms listed here illustrate concepts from cellular biology, systemic, and metabolic medicine. These definitions serve a purely educational and heuristic purpose and do not in any way replace the medical opinion, codified nosographic diagnosis, or therapies prescribed by an Ophthalmologist. Systemic modulation strategies are always intended as complementary support, to be used alongside—and never in place of—conventional ophthalmic care (EBM).

Schema EyeLongevity

Phlogotype (Inflammatory Profile)

A clinical and conceptual model describing a patient's "inflammatory reactivity profile." It indicates the specific way an individual's biology tends to trigger, manage, and resolve damaging stimuli (e.g., showing a tendency towards silent chronic inflammation, mucosal hyper-reactivity, or immune imbalances).
Ophthalmic relevance: Identifying the phlogotype allows the physician to assess the ocular tissue's susceptibility to chronic insults, guiding highly personalized nutritional and lifestyle support alongside topical therapies.

Dysnutritional States

These do not indicate a simple caloric deficiency, but define a subclinical qualitative and biochemical alteration of the cellular "terrain." In systemic medicine, three main aspects are typically evaluated: acid-base tissue imbalances (matrix acidosis), hyper-oxidation (excess free radicals), and specific deficits in essential micronutrients (vitamins, enzyme cofactors, polyunsaturated fatty acids).
In the EyeLongevity method: Correcting potential dysnutritional states aims to optimize the microenvironment in which retinal and corneal cells operate, acting synergistically with ongoing ophthalmic treatments.

Communicome (Cellular Cross-talk)

The intricate and dynamic network of biochemical signals (cytokines, hormones, neurotransmitters, exosomes) through which the body's various tissues and systems constantly communicate, regulating overall homeostasis.
The Gut-Brain-Eye Axis: The gut constantly sends biochemical messages to the nervous system and the eye via the bloodstream. Understanding these signals helps explain why intestinal stress can reflect on the inflammatory tone of the ocular surface.

Gut Microbiota

The ecosystem made up of billions of symbiotic microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, and fungi) populating our gastrointestinal tract, playing an essential role in regulating the immune barrier and systemic metabolism.
Visual connection: A chronic alteration of the microbiota (dysbiosis) and intestinal permeability can promote the release of systemic pro-inflammatory factors, acting as a potential aggravating cofactor in chronic eye diseases (e.g., dry eye, maculopathies).

Inflammaging

A gerontological neologism blending "Inflammation" and "Aging." It describes the progressive onset of a chronic, sterile, asymptomatic, low-grade inflammatory state that is closely associated with age-related functional decline.
The systemic goal: Counteracting systemic inflammaging is one of the strategies in geroscience to attempt to slow the biological decline of post-mitotic ocular structures (retina, optic nerve), preserving their resilience over the long term.

Exposome

An epidemiological concept defining the totality of environmental exposures and lifestyle habits an individual is subjected to from conception onwards (pollutants, UV radiation, circadian rhythms, diet, psycho-physical stress).
In practice: Visual health is not dictated exclusively by hereditary genetics; it depends critically on how the environmental exposome modulates the expression of our genes (epigenetics) over the years.

Hallmarks of Aging

The fundamental biological markers or "hallmarks" that drive and characterize the cellular aging process (e.g., cellular senescence, telomere attrition, mitochondrial dysfunction). These are not merely measurements of time, but active and partially modulable biochemical processes.
In practice: Studying these markers in ophthalmology highlights how the biological age (wear and tear) of retinal cells may not strictly correspond to the patient's chronological age.
